Dear Benefactors ,

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous support of Ukrainian students such as myself. I am honored to receive your support as a student at Tohoku University.

Your contributions have made a profound difference in my academic journey. Thanks to your generosity, I have been able to pursue my educational dreams, conduct research, go to various conferences around Japan, and even present at conferences held by the Japan Concrete Institute[MH2]  and the Architecture Institute of Japan. I have also been able to participate in other events such as the design competition organized by the Japan Structural Consultants Association[MH3] ’s Tohoku branch. In addition, I have had the incredible opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant and member of the university’s Science and International [MH4] Ambassador programs and assist with related activities. Your support has not only alleviated practical challenges but has also served as a powerful source of encouragement.

I am committed to making the most of this opportunity. I am deeply aware of the responsibility that accompanies this kind of support, and I strive to uphold the values and trust that your support represents. I will continue to work diligently and pursue academic excellence with integrity.

I would like to extend my gratitude for your continued support and belief in me ꟷ and in all of the other Ukrainian students who, thanks to your generosity, can pursue their dreams of receiving a quality education and contributing to society.

This past year has been transformative. I am proud to share that I have nearly completed all coursework requirements for my master’s degree and am now fully focusing on my research and graduation thesis. Throughout this time, I have filled gaps in my knowledge and developed new skills that I believe will serve me throughout my academic journey.

More importantly, I feel that I have grown as a researcher. I have learned to find fundamental problems and formulate processes to solve them, instead of simply completing assigned tasks. New connections with fellow students and professionals from my field have broadened my horizons and inspired me further to pursue my goals.

With your and the university's support, I was able to publish my first research paper: ‘Towards Equitable Translation: Gender Bias in Large Language Models’, which I also presented at a domestic academic conference. In the paper, I analyze the occurrence of gender bias in languages with grammatical gender (e.g., German gendered nouns such as the masculine ‘Japaner’ and feminine ‘Japanerin’ for ‘Japanese person’) when no additional context is given in Large Language Models (LLMs). The results showed that in ambiguous cases, modern multilingual LLMs can provide various translations for both masculine and feminine forms, with little skew towards masculine forms in uncommon instances.

While my work on gender bias confirmed the robustness of current models, it also highlighted the significant technical and resource demands of greater gender bias mitigation, especially for low-resource languages in this specific subfield. This realization, combined with my supervisor’s guidance, led me to pivot my focus toward a novel and highly challenging area within machine translation: Automatic Lyric Translation (ALT) tasks. ALT goes beyond the scope of standard text translation as it involves adapting to the unique constraints of music, while simultaneously preserving the meaning and fluency of the lyrics. This is a relatively new area of research, with the earliest attempt released in 2022 .

Similar to my previous topic, the decision to explore ALT was driven not only by personal interest but also by a social issue: the spread of hate and discrimination between people from different nations. I believe that by enabling easier access to other cultures, we can unite people, allowing them to enjoy and better understand art from around the world.

At the moment, I am finishing a survey paper which covers (1) pre-defined challenges of ALT, such as ensuring singability, following rhythm, and preserving meaning; (2) limitations to assessing quality, including the lack of open-sourced parallel data due to copyright issues and scarcity of high-quality data, as well as non-existing automatic evaluation metrics and human evaluation practice instructions; and (3) current approaches.

To the best of my knowledge, this will be the first comprehensive survey paper in this field. After publication, I plan to begin developing a new framework specifically for English-Japanese ALT as current efforts focus mostly on the English-Chinese language pair.

In the future, I hope to create a reliable system for ALT that enables people around the world to enjoy foreign music in their own languages, without losing the essence of the original. I believe the insights gained in this area will also apply to related domains such as poetry translation, opera subtitles, and voice-over scripts for film, encouraging faster and more meaningful cultural exchange.

この一年は、私に大きな変化をもたらしました。修士課程の授業をほぼ終え、今は研究と卒業論文に全力を注いでいます。この間、知識を深め新たなスキルを身につけました。

それ以上に、研究者として成長したと感じています。単に指示されたタスクをこなすだけでなく、根本的な問題を見つけ出し、それを解決するための道筋を立てることを学びました。また、同じ分野の学生や専門家との新しい繋がりは、私の視野を広げ、目標に向かうさらなる刺激を与えてくれました。

皆様と東北大学のご支援のおかげで、私の最初の研究論文「公平な翻訳に向けて：大規模言語モデルにおけるジェンダーバイアス」を発表し、これを国内の学会でも発表しました。この論文では、大規模言語モデル（LLM）が、文法性のある言語（例：ドイツ語で「日本人」を意味する男性名詞「Japaner」や女性名詞「Japanerin」）を文脈なしで翻訳する際に、ジェンダーバイアスがどれだけ出るかを分析しました。結果、曖昧なケースであっても、最新の多言語LLMは男性形と女性形どちらに対しても様々な翻訳を出せ、バイアスはほとんど見られないことが確認できました。

私のジェンダーバイアスに関する研究は、今のモデルが優れていることを示しましたが、同時に、特にリソースの少ない言語においてジェンダーバイアスをさらに減らすには、技術的、資源的に多くの努力が必要であることも分かりました。この気づきと、指導教員のアドバイスを受けて、私は機械翻訳の中でも新しくてとても難しい分野である自動歌詞翻訳（Automatic Lyric Translation, ALT）に焦点を移すことにしました。ALTは、普通のテキスト翻訳とは違い、歌詞の意味と自然さを保ちつつ、音楽の持つ独特な制約に適応させる必要があります。これは比較的新しい研究分野で、最初の取り組みが公開されたのは2022年です。

以前のテーマと同じく、ALTを選んだ理由は、個人的な興味だけでなく、国と国との間に広がる憎しみや差別という社会的な問題にもあります。他国の文化に触れる機会を増やすことで、人々が繋がり、世界中のアートを楽しみ、より深く理解できるようになると信じています。

現在、私はサーベイ論文を仕上げているところです。これには、(1) ALTの課題（歌いやすさ、リズム、意味の維持など）、(2) 品質評価の限界（著作権などでデータが少ないこと、良いデータがないこと、自動評価や人間評価の方法がないこと）、そして (3) 現在の研究アプローチが含まれます。

私の知る限り、これはこの分野で初めての包括的なサーベイ論文になる予定です。出版後、今は主に英語と中国語のペアの研究が多いので、私は特に英語と日本語のALTのための新しいフレームワークの開発を始める計画です。

将来的には、世界中の人々が、元の良さを失わずに、自分の言葉で外国の音楽を楽しめる、信頼できるALTシステムを完成させたいと思っています。この分野で得た知識は、詩の翻訳やオペラの字幕、映画の吹き替え台本などにも応用でき、文化をより速く、意味のある形で交換することを後押しすると信じています。
