本学に非正規生として修学中だったウクライナからの避難学生２名が、本学の大学院入試に見事合格し、2024年10月、大学院生としての研究生活を開始しました。

大学院入学にあたり、研究内容や抱負、寄附者の皆様への感謝のメッセージが寄せられましたので紹介いたします。

Dear Benefactors,

I want to express my heartfelt thanks for your generous support, which has made it possible for me to continue my graduate studies. This opportunity means a great deal to me and my family, who have made many sacrifices to support my education.

I was born in Ukraine to Vietnamese parents who moved there for work. Growing up in a multicultural environment, I naturally learned my parents’ language, Vietnamese, as well as Ukrainian and English during my early education. By high school, I was fluent in four languages[恵髙1] . Later, I began learning Japanese at university, which deepened my interest in how people from different cultures communicate. These experiences gave me a deeper appreciation for the challenges of communicating across cultures and the role of technology in bridging those gaps.

Currently, I am researching gender bias in machine translation (MT). As MT tools are increasingly used worldwide, their societal impact has raised concerns. Many existing studies focus on English alone, overlooking the unique challenges in other languages and cross-lingual settings. My research seeks to address these gaps, particularly for lesser-studied languages, to make MT more inclusive and equitable. My goal is to contribute to a future where these technologies enable smoother and fairer communication between people from different cultures.

In the future, I hope to continue this work and contribute to the academic and global community. I would also like to support future generations of students and participate in initiatives that strengthen connections between Japan and Ukraine.

このたびは、私の大学院での勉強を続けるためにご支援いただき、心より感謝申し上げます。この機会をいただけたことは、私自身にとっても、教育のためにたくさんの犠牲を払ってきた家族にとっても、大変意義深いものです。

私はウクライナでベトナム人の両親のもとに生まれました。両親は仕事のためにウクライナに移住しました。多文化な環境で育ったことで、自然に両親の母国語であるベトナム語、ウクライナ語、そして英語を早い段階で学びました。高校生の時点で4つの言語を話すことができ、大学では日本語の勉強を始めました。この経験から、異なる文化の人々がコミュニケーションをとる際の課題や、それを技術でどのように解決できるかについて深く考えるようになりました。

現在、私は機械翻訳におけるジェンダーバイアスについて研究を行っています。機械翻訳ツールは世界中で広く使われるようになっていますが、社会に与える影響について懸念が高まっています。「ジェンダーバイアス」とは、男性と女性、あるいは性別に関連する偏りやステレオタイプが翻訳に反映されてしまうことを指します。例えば、ある職業に男性や女性の性別が勝手に割り当てられるような状況が問題です。多くの研究は英語を中心に行われていますが、他の言語や複数の言語間の課題については十分に研究されていません。私の研究では、特にあまり研究が進んでいない言語に焦点を当て、機械翻訳がより公平で包括的になることを目指しています。これにより、異なる文化の人々がスムーズで公平なコミュニケーションをとれる未来を実現したいと考えています。

将来は、この研究をさらに進め、学術界やグローバルなコミュニティに貢献していきたいと思っています。また、次世代の学生を支援したり、日本とウクライナの絆を深める活動にも参加したいと考えています。

私の可能性を信じ、サポートしてくださったことに、心から感謝しています。皆さまのご支援は、私の努力をさらに後押しし、研究や今後の活動を通じて社会に役立つ貢献をする大きな原動力となっています。

I became a master student starting autumn semester 2024 and have been continuing to work on my research related to reinforced concrete walls with openings in Maeda sensei’s laboratory. Right now we are focusing on confirming the results of the elemental tests of the previous year on the specimens of a bigger scale and optimising introduced earlier opening reinforcements. I am hoping to continue my research work and contribute to innovations in this field. I am deeply grateful for this life-changing opportunity and continuous support from Tohoku University and donors who have supported me and other Ukrainian students.

2024年秋セメスターから、修士課程の学生となり、前田先生の研究室で、開口部のある鉄筋コンクリート壁に関する研究を続けています。

現在は、昨年の小規模試験で得られた結果を、より大きなスケールの試験体で確認すること、また、先に導入した開口部補強を最適化することに注力しています。

この研究を継続し、この研究分野におけるイノベーションに貢献したいと思っています。

このような人生を変える機会を与えていただいたこと、私を含む他のウクライナからの学生への東北大学ならびに寄附者の皆様の継続的なご支援に心から感謝しています。
